The Family Addiction Support Network has extensive experience in working with families who are living in fear and distress due to drug debt intimidation. We understand how frightening and overwhelming it can be — but you do not have to face it on your own.
What Is Drug Debt Intimidation?
Drug debt intimidation occurs when a person — often a young person or family member — has incurred a debt related to drugs, and threats or pressure are then directed towards them or their family to repay it. This form of intimidation can quickly spiral, with families being drawn into a situation they never expected and don’t know how to navigate.
What Does Intimidation Look Like?
Drug debt intimidation can take many forms. You may be experiencing:
- Aggressive or threatening phone calls or messages
- Uninvited visits to your home
- Threats of violence, damage to your home or car
- Pressure to make repayments, even if the debt isn’t yours
- Being told you or your loved one will be harmed if you don’t pay
- Intimidation in the local community or at work
These threats can leave families living in constant fear — afraid to go to the Gardaí, unsure of who to trust, and worried about what might happen next.
Should I Pay the Debt?
One of the most difficult and urgent questions families ask us is:
“Should I pay the debt?”
At FASN, we don’t offer one-size-fits-all advice. Instead, we work with you to help you carefully weigh up the advantages and disadvantages of this decision in your unique situation.
We help you consider the risks, safety concerns, emotional impacts, and potential consequences, while also linking you to the most appropriate supports in your local community — including Garda Liaison Officers trained in this area, community safety initiatives, and counselling support.

We are here to stand by your side, no matter what path you choose.
Our role is to:
