Free access to educational programs

FASN (Family Addiction Support Network) provides free access to educational programs specifically designed for family members and loved ones affected by someone else’s drug or alcohol use. Whether you’re seeking support on your own or alongside others in similar situations, we offer two impactful programs: the 5-Step Method and group access to the RISE Family Programme. These programs are available for anyone aged 18 or over and are delivered either in person or online, depending on your preference and location.

The 5-Step Educational Programme

The 5-Step Method is an evidence-based intervention designed for family members affected by a relative’s substance use. This approach recognises that addiction doesn’t only affect the person using substances — it can deeply impact family members, often causing high levels of stress and emotional strain. The 5-Step Method helps you understand these effects and build practical strategies to cope and respond in a way that prioritises your own wellbeing.

FASN has trained 5-Step Method facilitators available to deliver this program in a flexible format — one-to-one, one-to-two, or in small groups — either face-to-face or online.

What is the 5-Step Method?
The 5-Step Method is a non-judgemental, non-directive problem-solving intervention. It recognises that family members are the experts in their own lives, and it gives them the tools and space to explore what they’re going through, with the support of a trained facilitator.

This programme is based on the Stress-Strain-Coping-Support (SSCS) model of addiction. It typically involves five sessions (or fewer if steps are combined), with each one focusing on a different theme:

Step 1: How the problem affects you & your family
Explore how your loved one’s drug or alcohol use impacts you and your family’s day-to-day life and wellbeing.

Step 2: Getting information
Receive clear, relevant information about addiction and its effects to address any fears or misconceptions you may have.

Step 3: Ways of responding
Identify the different ways you’ve been responding to your loved one’s behaviour and discover responses that are healthier for you.

Step 4: Getting help from other people
Recognise who in your life or community can offer support to help you manage the stress more effectively.

Step 5: Further help
Assess whether you or your family need additional support — and explore how to encourage your loved one to seek help if appropriate.

The 5-Step Method was developed by Addiction and the Family International Network (AFINet-UK). More at www.afinetwork.info.

The RISE Foundation Family Programme

The RISE Foundation’s 10-week Family Programme is a therapeutic, non-residential programme developed to educate and support family members who have a loved one in addiction. It aims to create a better understanding of addiction and how it impacts family life.

This programme is delivered in a group setting of up to 12 participants and facilitated by two qualified RISE addiction counsellors. It runs for three hours one evening per week over the course of ten weeks.

The sessions are a blend of lectures and group therapy, creating a space for shared learning and emotional support. Originally delivered in person, the programme is now also available online, providing flexible access to families regardless of location.
