Cavan, Monaghan, Meath & Louth, 28th August 2023 – FASN – The Family Addiction Support Network proudly announces its support and enthusiasm for not one, but two significant events set to take place on International Overdose Awareness Day (IOAD) – Thursday, August 31st, 2023. As the world comes together to remember those lost to overdose and acknowledge the grief of the families left behind, FASN applauds the decision to illuminate the Cavan Courthouse in purple and warmly embraces the theme of this year’s IOAD: “Recognising Those People Who Go Unseen.”

The theme “Recognising Those People Who Go Unseen” resonates deeply with FASN’s mission and values. It captures the essence of those often unnoticed but profoundly impactful individuals who navigate the challenges of addiction, overdose, and grief. This theme acknowledges the resilient families and friends who mourn the loss of a loved one, the dedicated healthcare and support workers who provide unwavering strength and compassion, and the spontaneous first responders who courageously step in to save lives.

Event 1: Illumination of Cavan Courthouse The illumination of the Cavan Courthouse in purple stands as a global symbol of unity, compassion, and remembrance. This gesture highlights the urgency of ending the stigma surrounding overdose and addiction while offering solace and support to those who have been impacted by this global crisis.

The illumination of the Cavan Courthouse in a shade of purple on International Overdose Awareness Day holds a timely and poignant significance. As communities across the Northeast grapple with a distressing increase in reported deaths due to drug use, coupled with a concerning rise in cocaine use, this symbolic gesture resonates deeply. The courthouse bathed in purple serves as a solemn reminder of the lives lost to overdose and addiction within these very communities. This not only brings awareness to the urgent need for comprehensive support and prevention measures but also underscores the collective commitment to breaking the cycle of substance abuse and fostering empathy for those affected by its tragic consequences. At the time of going to press, consideration is also being given by the varied county councils to light up courthouses across Meath, Louth and Monaghan in solidarity.

Event 2: HSE National Social Inclusion Office’s Live Webinar As part of the world’s collective effort to raise overdose awareness and acknowledge the profound grief experienced by families and friends, the HSE National Social Inclusion Office is hosting a LIVE WEBINAR on Zoom. The webinar will feature an array of insightful speakers, including Daniel O’Callaghan, who will address the poignant topic of “Special Death”: Living with Bereavement by Drug-Related Death in Ireland. This virtual event provides a platform for sharing experiences, learning, and fostering empathy within the community.

No family is immune to the devastation of addiction and far too many suffer the heartbreak of losing loved ones to overdose. Addiction and overdose affect people of all races, religions, and socio-economic status. These dual events, we hope, will serve as a beacon of love and support for families and friends, and a reminder to those fighting addiction and their family members, that you are not alone and that help is available.

As we mark International Overdose Awareness Day, let us unite in commemorating the lives lost, acknowledging the grief experienced by families and friends, and standing alongside those who have gone unseen but have made an indelible impact in the fight against overdose deaths.
